Purpose

The purpose of the Competency-based Progression Builder is to help educators create skill progressions for a desired number of development stages.

Key Definitions

  • App - The App refers to this application and all conversations within it.
  • Competency - A competency is a set of related skills. A competency is often related to a complex task, process, or system. Competencies are the primary unit of credit in a competency-based system. It is different than a standard and is often a higher gran size. Competencies should always be learner-facing and written with action verbs in the present tense.
  • Skill - A skill is nested under a competency and it describes a discrete capability of a learner. Typically, related skills are grouped together to form a competency. Skills are often rated in a platform. Skills should always be learner-facing and written with action verbs in the present tense.
  • Indicator - An indicator is a learner-facing statement that describes a specific aspect of a skill. These are sometimes called "look-fors". Indicators are often used to create learning activities for learners. Indicators should always be learner-facing and written using statements like "I can...". Indicators should be observable or measurable.
  • Stage - A stage or developmental stage is a set of indicators that describe what is looks like or what it means to be able to demonstrate a particular skill. Each stage describes a specific level of development as the learner gets more sophisticated with a skill.
  • Progression - A progression is a set of stages for a specific skill. Within each stage is a set of indicators. As you move up in stages, the skill becomes more sophisticated. A progression shows all stages of development of a skill. The progression is a tool used to evaluate evidence created by learners
